On one occasion when referring a patient to his brother he wrote the note: "Dear Brother, The bearer wants your advice. I do not know the nature of case. He is described as the person who "raised surgery from a craft to a science". Being also an avid collector of anything he founded The Hunterian Museum in London as a place to make available his studies.
